Choosing the Right Eyeglasses Frame to fit your Face Shape

The correct colour of frames for you is based on your season and hair colour. When buying plastic frames, choose the same colour as your hair, but one shade lighter. If you are pale or sallow-skinned, do choose plastic frames, which bring colour to your face. Autumns in particular should consider this option.

Winters and Summers, the cool seasons, should make sure that their frames — particularly brown ones — are not reddish or golden. Even tortoiseshell must be a cool brown. If you choose metal frames, they should be silver-toned.

Autumns and Springs, the warm seasons, should choose plastic frames with a warm red or golden tone. Metal frames should be gold-toned.

Colour Tints for Eyeglasses Lenses

The best colour choices for tinted sunglasses, eye doctors say, are dark grey, green and brown. Choose the correct tint for your season — grey for the cool seasons, brown or green for the warm seasons. Avoid colours such as blue (which makes it difficult to distinguish the colour of traffic signals) lavender, orange, and rose (which screen out too little light to protect your eyes) and yellow (which actually intensifies the light).

Eye Care BlogFor regular tinted glasses, choose no more than a 10 per cent tint. It is fashionable now, and attractive, to tint the top of the lenses in a neutral 30 per cent tint (say grey or brown, depending on your season), leave the centre plain, and tint the bottom in a 10 to 20 per cent tint. The effect is very subtle and flattering, but leaves your eyes free to see naturally out of the centre of your glasses.

Choosing the Right Eyeglasses Frame Shape

Glasses should complement the shape of your face. Choose frames that follow the shape of the top of your brow. The heaviness of the frames should be scaled to your bone structure.

You can adjust the width of the glasses frame for best effect. For most faces, keep the frames the same width as your temple. Choose them a little narrower to compensate for a wide face or a little wider for a narrower face. Too narrow and they’ll look dinky, too wide and you’ll look like a caricature!

Here are some tips for selecting frames to suit your face shape.

Oval Face and Eyeglasses Frame

An oval face can wear any frame that is not extreme. Anything too large, too small or too angular will look unbalanced. Choose a style that suits your bone structure, clothing personality and season.

Round Face and Eyeglasses Frame

A round face needs to create the illusion of cheekbones with frames that are straight across the top, angle inward toward the bottom and square off across the bottom. Avoid round glasses or curved sides, which will emphasise roundness. Severely square glasses are also wrong because the contrast in shapes is too extreme.

Square Face and Eyeglasses Frame

Slightly rounded or curved frames with height on top can modify a too-square face. Since you want to lengthen the look of your face, aviator frames are handsome if your cheekbones are pronounced and gravity has not yet begun to make you jowly.

Rectangle Face and Eyeglasses Frame

A rectangular face, being long and square, needs added width. A wide, square frame with slightly rounded corners or an overall rounded style is generally best.

Triangle Face and Eyeglasses Frame

Since the triangular face has a broad forehead and narrow chin, you want glasses that create balance. The top piece of the frames should not be heavy, and the sides should not be wider than your temples. Consider glasses with a curved, dropped bottom piece. Square shapes are out, as is a heavy bridge.
