Eye, The Mirror of the Soul
We say that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. We experience the truth of this every day when we meet people. Our emotions are obvious in our eyes, and we recognize the same emotions when we look into the eyes of others. Because we are feeling and empathetic beings, what and how we feel directly influences the quality of what we see.
People can have a hard, fixed gaze or a soft, open expression. The hard, fixed gaze speaks of anger and rage. The soft, open look reflects love, joy, and curiosity. The intense emotions generated by fear, unbearable pain, or, at the other end of the spectrum, love, can literally blind us to reality. On the other hand, a lack of emotion conveys a sense of distance and emptiness.
“Seeing” with emotional clarity means that you are able to decide which emotions to express, how much emotion to express, what emotions in the environment you want to react to, and where you need to draw boundaries. In other words, the process of seeing includes the quality of emotional connections, as well as distancing. The quality of emotions and the physical and optical function of seeing create an inseparable whole. They represent the two sides of the active process of seeing: most emotions are expressed in the body, but physical conditions also affect the soul.
The Mind Recognizes
We “see” or recognize only what we already know. Unless we are interested in what our eyes see, the expression in our eyes remains empty. Experience has shown that eyes become tired much quicker when we have no emotional involvement in our surroundings. Our attitude, our visual ability to remember and imagine, our expectations—all of these play a role in how we perceive an image that appears to our mental eye.
Consciously Experiencing What We See
According to the French theologian and evolutionist Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, “What is most difficult for humans to see is that which is infinitely far away and infinitely close.” The quote emphasizes the point that nothing is more difficult than the ability to “see”.
The following exercise will show you “how you see.” It is a way of training what your eyes perceive. Do the exercises in a place where you won’t be interrupted. Recommended time: ten minutes.
